Slack is increasing prices and altering the functionality of its free plan

Slack, the chat software that acts as an online watercooler for a tremendous number of teams, is raising its monthly fee and altering the functionality of its free plan. The corporation published a blog post announcing the changes.

Here's what's changing:

  • The cost of the "Pro" plan will rise to $8.75 per user per month in case you opt for monthly payment.
  • The cost of the same "Pro" plan rises to $7.25 per user per month if youopt for annual payment (from the current $6.67 per user per month)
  • They are altering the method and duration of message storage if you are on the free plan. In the past, the most recent 10,000 messages and 5 GB of uploads would be visible on the free version of Slack. In the future, regardless of how much or how little communication occurs, Slack will show the most recent 90 days' of conversations and uploads.

Those with the Slack Business+ subscriptions, which costed around $12.50 or $15 per user per month (depending on whether the teams selected annual or monthly billing) remain unaffected by the recent announcement. The company has emphasised that the changes in prices only affect the ‘Pro’ plan customers.

The changes, which the company claims as the "first price increase since Slack was launched in 2014," will take effect from September 1st, 2022. Users may lock another year in the current pricing bracket if they renew before September 2022, the company announced in a blog post.

Slack's Price Hike Reflect an Industry Standard

The upcoming price increases for Slack aren't particularly significant, but they reflect a broader trend of increased expenses in the enterprise software sector.

According to a new Gartner analysis, the cost of IT services would increase by an additional 3% in 2022 across the board, from project management to web conferencing software.

When questioned about these increases, many software companies cited the inflation problem as one of the main causes. Passing on these price increases to smaller firms would worsen their financial situation because most businesses will soon suffer the full impact of inflation.
